Hymenoplasty or Hymen Repair

Hymenoplasty:-

Hymenoplasty surgery is done to repair or reconstruct the torn hymen.

What is Hymenoplasty?

hymenoplasty

Hymen reconstruction surgery, also known as hymen surgery, hymenoplasty surgery or hymen restoration, is the surgical procedure for repair of the hymen. Using a surgical technique, the torn edges of the hymen are put back together. If done correctly, to the visible eye, there is no apparent scarring and the hymen appears intact. After this type of hymen surgery and without complication, subsequent intercourse will typically tear the membrane causing pain and bleeding.

Why have Hymen Repair?

The hymen is a concentric membranous flake of tissue which encircles the vaginal orifice from the urethral orifice backwards and allows the escape of menstrual blood.

In many cultures the hymen is considered a token of virginity and for cultural and religious reasons can be an important factor in a new marriage. In many cases marriages are even annulled if the hymen is torn.

Now that hymen repair is available and relatively safe, many women and families are opting for this solution.

What is involved in Hymen Repair?

Hymen repair is a simple operation which involves excision of the torn edges before stitching them with fine dissolvable sutures. It is often performed under local anaesthetic with sedation, but can also be performed under general anesthetic.

This surgery is not particularly invasive. The hymen actually has a secondary layer that will be sown up to cover the torn skin. As it grafts together once more, the hymen will appear intact. Or if for any reason this is not possible then a new hymen can be created from the lip of the vagina.

Are there any risks associated with Hymen Repair?

Hymenoplasty is a relatively safe procedure that tends to carry few risks and side effects. However any operation carries a small risk of infection and prolonged bleeding, as well as those associated with anaesthetic.

Any complication from hymen repair is very rare. Occasionally there is a resulting problem of ‘stricture’ or hymen over-correction. This is where the opening becomes narrowed, meaning that the next act of intercourse will be difficult. However this only very rarely causes problems in the long-term.

Are there any risks involved?

When labiaplasty / vaginoplasty surgery is performed by a trained surgeon, complications are infrequent and usually minor. As with any surgery, there is always the risk of infection, but our experienced labiaplasty / vaginoplasty surgeons take steps to minimize this potential risk. You can reduce risks by following the instructions you are given both before and after your surgery.

How do I plan for labia surgery?

During your initial consultation, it is very important to discuss your expectations of the surgery. They will review your medical history; be sure to tell them about any medical conditions you may have. It is also very important to disclose the use of any medications, including vitamins and herbal supplements, as well as alcohol, tobacco and drug use. The surgical technique and anesthesia that will be used for your surgery is discussed at this consultation.

What happens during labia surgery?

Labiaplasty / vaginoplasty usually take less than one hour, depending on the extent of your surgery. Typically, the procedure is performed under a sedation anesthesia. The appropriate incision location depends on many individual factors, including the configuration, texture and size of the labia.

What happens after the labiaplasty / vaginoplasty procedure?

You will experience mild swelling and bruising in the surgical area. You will return to our clinic about five days after labia surgery. You will be instructed to avoid any heavy exercise for approximately 2-3 weeks to help reduce any swelling or discomfort. Pain medication will be prescribed to help with any discomfort you may experience, which is usually minimal. Often, the doctor will also prescribe an antibiotic.

How long is the recovery after labiaplasty / vaginoplasty?

Due to the vascular nature of this area, the incisions will heal very quickly. You will be able to return to daily activities several days after your procedure. For the first several weeks activities should be limited and sexual intercourse should be avoided. Tampons should not be used in the 10 days after your surgery, but you may need to wear a pad for comfort and to accommodate any light drainage from the incision area.

Many women are now seeking cosmetic vaginal surgery to recreate sexual excitement, restore self-esteem and rejuvenate their love lives. Vaginal reconstruction is in the form of vaginoplasty (vaginal rejuvenation and tightening) and labia surgery is in the form of Labiaplasty / vaginoplasty (labia reduction and beautification). Hymenoplasty (reconstruction of the hymen) returns the ruptured hymen to a pre-sexual state. Labiaplasty / vaginoplasty and Vaginoplasty can be performed at the same time or in combination with other common Plastic and Cosmetic procedures such as Rhinoplasty, Breast Enhancement or Reduction, Abdominoplasty, or Liposculpturing.
